The `newfloat' package led me to a straightforward solution, 
as opposed to my earlier suggestions. The `tocloft' package

    http://ctan.org/pkg/tocloft

offers a command \newlistof. The section of `tocloft.pdf' that 
describes this macro has an example `answer'. Perhaps you can 
just copy it and replace all occurences of `answer' by `example'.
