[texhax] Entering horizontal lines between items

I don't know about LaTeX, but the following works like a charm in Plain Tex:


Item 1:$\underline{\phantom{xxxxx}}$ Item 2:$\underline{\phantom{xxx}}$ 

Item 3:$\underline{\phantom{xxxxxxxxxxx}}$ Item 4:$\underline{\phantom{xxxxx}}$  

The length of the underline is determined by the number of x's or X's in the argument of \phantom.
