I think the sample bib files included "interesting" scenarios on purpose to
showcase biblatex's capabilities. My experience is that existing bibtex .bib
files can be used directly in biblatex (bar the numeric month fields)

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for, do you mean
\parencite{Smith:2001,Doe:2003}? That would give you (Smith, 2001; Doe,
2003).
