[texhax] microtype and varioref - conflict?

it boils down to a problem as to how one can have oldstyle page numbers 
that will work with varioref and microtype

Here is a minimal example

\usepackage{microtype}

\newcommand*{\@oldstyle}[1]{{%
  \oldstylenums{\number#1}}}
\makeatother
