You're welcome.

The problem is the definition of centercolon feature. Getting babels
active characters to play nicely with the same characters being
math-active only can be troublesome. By loading mathtools first babel
just overwrites whatever mathtools did to the colon and the problem is
gone. Of course, it means you can't use the feature...

When I find a good solution for breqn (where all math symbols and
characters are macros in math mode), I'll adopt it for mathtools as
well.

It loads amsmath automatically and will take amsmath options as well.
