Thanks Karl,

yes, that was the question. I managed to fix it myself by changing to a
different package. I don't have the details here, so I won't try to go
into it further!

Essentially, when I used the \citationmode{abbr} to abbreviate the
refereces, it had no effect and they failed to abbreviate in the output. I
tried varoius ways and means, but to no avail.

But there are many ways to solve a problem and I used a completely
different package which did the job perfectly!
