[texhax] Bibtex Abbreviations

Is there a way to define an abbreviation in bibtex for a "long" version 
and a "short" versioni of the same entry?

For instance, I can define an abbreviation icgg1 for the "International 
Conference of Gnats and Gnus, Series 1".  however, if space is of 
concernce I may want bibtex to automatically tyepset a shorter, "Intl. 
Conf. of Gnats and Gnus, S. 1".

Is there a way to do this automatically or do I need to define another 
"short" abbreviation (ex, icgg1_short)?
