Yes, this works perfectly! I don't know why my example I posted did
not prevent a hyphen. According to my LaTeX book, \nobreakline[4]
should make a line break virtually impossible.

Thanks everyone else for your suggestions. Uwe's suggestion is
simple and easy to implement in a conversion.
