yes this should work, but only for the fonts used for actual TeX
typesetting. If PDFs are embedded (e. g. by \includeimage) that don't
contain their own fonts, pdftex will not add the corresponding font
files, particularily as there is no obvious info in the embedded PDFs
about which characters from the 14 standard fonts are needed.

So one needs to check before embedding that all PDFs come with their own
fonts...
