Because you might want to understand what the hell you're doing?
And maybe even learn something in the process?

Give somebody a package, you make him happy for a day.
Teach him how to program, he'll come up with his own solutions later on.
(It's like the thing with the fishing.)

Both types of answer are useful, both the
\usepackage[fly]{magic}...
and the
\makeatletter\ifx\wing@\relax\futurelet\fly at tool...

The audience of this list (and its needs) are varied. Sometimes one
is looking for an immediate pretty solution, but somebody else
listening might learn something from the down-and-dirty ad hoc solution.

I think we should all stop with this obsessive package-only approach
--- to the insane point of reproaching somebody who comes up with an
ad hoc solution ---, and let both types of answer proliferate. After
all, this is not an MS Word list. It's called "texhax", so let the
hacking be.
