[texhax] General font question

This probably isn't quite the right list to ask this, but I'm betting
someone here can help anyway.
Does there exist a single reference somewhere that goes over all the
things one needs to know when managing a system where you use TeX fonts,
X11 fonts and Mac fonts?
Along with TeX, I use a number of X programs, and I notice they all
"see" a different collection of fonts. None of these, of course, are
the same collection as my TeX fonts (except, mysteriously, xdvi and gv),
and they're different from the collection of Mac fonts, too.
I'd love to write or find a script that translates all the formats into
each other so that each program can see the same set of fonts, so I can
stop worrying about them, at least for a while. I'm sure some
translations won't be possible because of format inconsistencies, or the
lack of "hints" whatever those are, but I bet I can come a lot closer
than I am now.
Thanks to the FAQ, I think I get how to generate the tfm files from some
of the sources, but I'd love to find a clear overview of the whole mess,
including such confusing details as hints. Anyone know of such a
