\beta is part of the core latex distribution.

if you had bothered to report what the error was, i could be more
helpful than merely using my crystal ball:

  "missing $ inserted" is corrected by putting the \beta in maths, so
  you can change:

    ... this is a \beta-version ...

  into either

    ... this is a \ensuremath{\beta}-version ...

  or

    ... this is a $\beta$-version ...

  the first form is preferred, since it's more robust, but the latter
  is less typing.
