for playing around it's even easier just to run

mptopdf --raw fig.mp

(uses LaTeX or TeX) or

mptopdf fig.mp

(uses metafun mode) which produces a self-standing PDF file including
all required fonts (if the distro has everything including ConTeXt
properly set up).

it is already greatly improved (particularily the details of LaTeX
interaction, e. g. the TEX macro has been extended), and mpost 0.901 is
available, see the "Docs" area at
