[texhax] latex runs much slower as nis user

In all likelihood, this as zilch to do with TeX/LaTeX and friends, and 
a lot to do with your whole environment.

Check with your system mavins to figure out what is going on.  Look for:
   - $PATH entries on the network, possibly pointing to
     non-existent servers
   - different $PATH entries for local vs network login
   - "." in your path, and slow access to servers
   - a potentially uncountable number of other gotchas
     that justify paying your system mavins the big bucks :-}
