[texhax] BibTeX+natbib+apalike

I'm using the natbib package with apalike.bst bibliography style. My
references are stored in a BibTeX database.
Referring to a sample BibTeX entry

@article{LABEL,
Author = {John R. Smith and Simon H. Reed and Edward T. Morrison},
year = 2004,
[...]
}

what I get in the References list is:

Smith, J. R., Reed, S. H., and Morrison, E.T. (2004). [...]

I would like to suppress the comma before the authors initials and
before the 'and' separing the last author name, i.e.

Smith J. R., Reed S. H. and Morrison E.T. (2004). [...]

I would like to know if another .bst style can do that, before trying to
modify apalike.bst myself (maybe with makebst).

Thank you
Luca Turchetti
