It's not a big problem; I suppose there's really no way for you to  
know who's (ab)using it as I am.

Thanks.  That's similar to what I'm doing now, but I didn't consider  
svn version numbering.  I'm not sure how carried away I want to get  
with that...

Good.  If I read that regex correctly, that's basically what I came up  
with by reverse-engineering it.  At least it's trivial compared to  
tlmgr1 :).

If that's not a big problem for you, I'd certainly find it useful;  
Norbert's machine readable option for tlmgr2 certainly made things  
easier for me!
