My lay-man suggestion:

The number of characters that are non ASCII seem to be very limited.
Basically it's around 10 symbols in one single file in two methods. What
about moving those two methods to another (tiny) file, which can then be
duplicated and maintained in two separate versions until pdftex has died out
and luatex has taken over?

If you have any quick-fix suggestions for the pgfplots thing I would also
appreciate that. That one seems to be an issue across latex-binaries.
