Never mind, \pdfmapfile is pdftex primitive, it will work in plain pdf TeX too.<br><br><div class="gmail_quote">2010/9/29 Mark London <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:mrl@psfc.mit.edu">mrl@psfc.mit.edu</a>></span><br>

<pre><tt>I have prepared a sample file that will use real Helvetica (in fact
real PS35 fonts) without spoiling your system. The file is that
simple:
\documentclass{article}
\pdfmapfile{=psnfss.map}
\usepackage{helvet}
\begin{document}\sf
This text \textbf{with the above map file} will be typeset using the
\textsl{real \textbf{Helvetica}
font} instead of the Nimbus fonts.
\end{document}
The document will triger a few errors because SlantFont and ExtendFont
may only be used with embedded fonts (if you mind them, create your
own copy of psnfss map under a different name and remove unnecessary
lines). Since I work in Linux and I do not have Helvetica fonts, you
can see that Acrobat Reader replaces them with AdobeSerif MM without
using boldface and oblique, so the result seems unusable to me.

Then you could run:
getnonfreefonts-sys arial-urw
You have to install getnonfreefonts first. See:
