See attachment for figure_fsteps.pdf ... could be that this is only one
of a set of pdf figures which caused the crash in libpoppler due maybe
wrong (memory) management of the huge numbers of pdf figures used by
the final gnuplot documentation.

Indeed with poppler 0.57.0 aka libpoppler.so.68.0.0 only the warnings
about 

``multiple pdfs with page group included in a single page''

occur but no crash.  The final gnuplot.pdf looks perfect even with
multiple figures included :)

Even with intentional introduced incompatibilities, a crash is simply
a bug
