Hello, Well, it is peculiar. I started subshells and the PATH remains the same with /usr/local/texlive/2016/... featured prominently and early. However, I did "fix" the problem -- I killed the MATE terminal window, restarted it, and then latex worked properly. So, thank you all! Chip Campbell
