Running file on the individual files on my system, Ubuntu 16.04:

doc$ file upmendex/upmendex.doc
upmendex/upmendex.doc: LaTeX raw index file, UTF-8 Unicode text
doc$ file latex/dccpaper/ijdc-v9.doc
latex/dccpaper/ijdc-v9.doc: LaTeX document, ASCII text
doc$ file latex/dccpaper/idcc.doc
latex/dccpaper/idcc.doc: LaTeX document, ASCII text

doc$ file --version
file-5.25
magic file from /etc/magic:/usr/share/misc/magic
