Interesting report.

If you look at the file list of your file:

  ┌────
  │ article.cls 2014/09/29 v1.4h Standard LaTeX document class
  │ size10.clo 2014/09/29 v1.4h Standard LaTeX file (size option)
  │ subfig.sty 2005/06/28 ver: 1.3 subfig package
  │ keyval.sty 2014/10/28 v1.15 key=value parser (DPC)
  │ caption.sty 2015/09/17 v3.3-111 Customizing captions (AR)
  │ caption3.sty 2015/09/17 v1.7-111 caption3 kernel (AR)
  └────

you see that `subfig' didn't change since ages and, by contrast,
'caption(3)' changed in July. The latter was updated on CTAN only
yesterday:

  ┌────
  │ http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.ctan.announce/12022/
  └────

So I guess `caption(3)' is (are) the culprit(s), not `subfig'.

Best regards.
