[tex-live] tlmgr gui fails in Mate Desktop on Scientic Linux 7, perl 5.16.3

Works fine using Gnome Shell, but Gnome Shell crashes often, so using Mate.


$ tlmgr gui

This is perl 5, version 16, subversion 3 (v5.16.3) built for
x86_64-linux-thread-multi
(with 25 registered patches, see perl -V for more detail)

There is a similar bug report <
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1141117> for
perl-5.20.0-307.fc22.x86_64 against FC22.
This seems to be a font issue, so may be a result of different fonts used by
Mate vs Gnome.
