Well, this morning after a restart of my computer:

  $ kpsewhich --all texmf.cnf
  /usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf.cnf
  /usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf

and everything works nicely, even without 'openin_any = a'
in:

  /usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf.cnf

I guess the trouble came from my (un)installation of TL 2012 and 2013
that a restart cleaned up.
