Hmmm... /usr/texbin points to another symbolic link in a structure that has a fixed structure itself. You'd have to build that structure on the fly. 

My other question is about how the Apple Installer works. Does it simply unpack a ``zip'' file into some structure and then copy things from that unpacked structure (set of folders) such that it won't overwrite newer files but all to a fixed location or can you relocate the base of the structure it's going to copy too? Is that muddled enough?
