sorry about the noise. I do not seem to be able to replicate the problem 
(just tried installing texmaker again), this time xdvi worked fine (just 
went through a massive Ubuntu 11.04 as well so that might explain the 
problem).

I'll write again if/when I'm able to replicate the problem.
