Or just look at the --help output:

$ /usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/x86_64-darwin/fmtutil --help |grep error
  --no-error-if-no-format    exit successfully if no format is selected

$ ls -l /usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/x86_64-darwin/fmtutil
-rwxr-xr-x  1 amaxwell  wheel  32963 Jul  4  2010 /usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/x86_64-darwin/fmtutil
