main memory contains macro definitions and the material for the
current page. 

You can use \tracingstats=2 to get some statistic:

Memory usage before: 1121&34494; after: 199&33932; still untouched:
2951170
[2]
Memory usage before: 351&33889; after: 199&33884; still untouched:
2951170 

The number to the left of the &'s are boxes etc, the numbers on the
right macro definitions.
