[tex-live] label and ref not working in TexLive2010

To whom it may concern:

I've been using TexLive2010 for a few weeks but just now have noticed that
when I create a \label{asdf} and try to reference it later via \ref{asdf},
this does NOT work.

\pageref{asdf} does work though so I'm not sure what to make of this.

I'm using this inside an 'elsart' class file but have reproduced this error
in a default template in TeXshop of an 'article' class file as well. I'm
assuming this is a global bug affecting all of TexLive2010 and is not unique
to my system.
