unfortunately, since most of tex live is lzma compressed (this year),
zipping it will in general *increase* its size.

this is plainly a ridiculous thing to do.  ftp.tex.ac.uk is the only one
of the ctan sites that does this sort of thing on the fly.  i shall
suppress it on my site, for the systems/texlive directories, forthwith.
