[tex-live] Did you ever try "texdoc latex"?

good points.  however, my faq does try to start "gently" -- the first
few sections discuss what the universe of discourse is, and what to use
(of plain, latex, context), and the next section provides lists of
documentation.

perhaps a "how to get started" at the very beginning might be worth
doing.  i'll work on that tonight, if i don't fall asleep...
