Hi,
texconfig doesn't use whiptail indeed.  Instead, it uses its own
version of dialog called tcdialog.  Binaries are provided for every
Unix system supported by TL.

$ ls bin/*/tcdialog|grep solaris
bin/i386-solaris/tcdialog
bin/sparc-solaris/tcdialog

What exactly doesn't work?
