Last year Karl Berry promised to do this for the next (2008)  
distribution, mainly because font distributions like MinionPro chocked  
TeX (while gwTeX, with significantly more memory allocation, worked  
fine). I told him I had to modify texmf.cnf (mainly copying values  
from gwTeX's texmf.cnf) and then rebuild formats for MinionPro to work.

P.S. Later distributions of MinionPro reduced significantly the number  
of files, so maybe now even with lower memory that won't be a problem,  
but who knows...
