[tex-live] TL 2008: install doesn't work?

That bare "/texconfig/tcfmgr" looks wrong.

The tcfmgr script should exist as
/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/texconfig/tcfmgr.  Is it there?

Do you have any TEX* environment variables set?

Does kpsewhich --var-value=TEXMFMAIN return the right path?
