I can reproduce the crash on xp and w2k, although xelatex doesn't
crash on all files. On vista, sample2e is ok and story compiles the
first time around but not next times.  Deleting story.* doesn't
help, deleting xetex.fmt does help.

After a crash, the logfile mentions `access violation'.

Might it be that the new xetex depends on Windows components which
are not always present on Western Windows versions?
