It does not "require". It is just a convention that we use. For base
distribution applictaions the prefix /usr is used. For third party
apps we use the prefix /usr/local. Its whatever you are used to. I
wouldn't consider this odd. You should see some of the paths solaris
uses!

This makes sense. It also sounds like a right royal pain. I reckon
thats going to take a long time (correct me if I am wrong, I haven't
yet taken a look at this config file)

Also now I have 2 solutions to investigate (I have not forgotten your
suggestion Hartmut).

Does anyone know what the consequences are of not running the map
generation atall? I assume that the existing maps in the texlive texmf
(from DVD) were run on a full tree. I suppose you would get an error
of you use a font that is not installed, but you would get that anyway
right?

Meanwhile I will investigate your suggestions.
