[tex-live] TeXLive on old SPARC Solaris

Vladimir answered about the shared libs.  I wanted to mention a couple
other things that struck me:
    
    kpsewhich: unrecognized option `--var-value=TEXMFMAIN'

This seems like you are finding an old version of kpsewhich, because
kpsewhich --var-value=TEXMFMAIN certainly is recognized with the
kpsewhich in TL 2007.

    /usr/local/texlive/2007/bin/sparc-solaris/fmtutil: /texconfig/tcfmgr: not found

Looks like it's not finding the texmf root.

    even if the environment has been setup correctly (all needed TEXMFXXX
    variables correctly defined; 

No TEXMF* variables need be defined, and in fact defining them is a
common source of errors.  

The only thing that is necessary to define for a normal installation is
putting /usr/local/texlive/2007/bin/sparc-solaris in PATH.
