It's documented in updmap.cfg(5):

|        Similar to Map. It should be used when there is Type1 and a

|        map of dvips if dvipsPreferOutline is set to false.  Usage:

If you use MixedMap, you can switch from using Type1 fonts to PK fonts,
either with "updmap --setoption dvipsPreverOutline=false", or by calling
dvips with "-u psfonts_pk" (I think).  This might make sense if PK fonts
give better output on a particular printer.
