It also depends on the terminal output, particularly on the size of the
xterm window (!), e. g. compare

$ time pdflatex yourfile.tex

with

$ time pdflatex yourfile.tex 2>&1 > /dev/null

Here it's e. g. (both TeX Live 2005)

real    0m1.561s
user    0m0.388s
sys     0m0.013s

vs.

real    0m0.403s
user    0m0.354s
sys     0m0.027s

So it's very critical to have exactly the same conditions for both
tests.
