Argh.  I don't understand this.  Only Sebastian really knows p4 :(.
Maybe poke around perforce.com and/or the web in general?  (I'm kind of
stuck right now and can't do it.)

    noallwrite clobber nocompress unlocked modtime rmdir

Same for me.  I don't think any of those affect readability, anyway.

Well, we have an older version on tug.  It would be quite sad if that
is the problem.

    tug$ p4 -V

I temporarily copied the binary I'm using to ftp://tug.org/private/p4.
Can you grab it and see if it changes anything?
