    Is openin_any described anywhere else

Have to add it, I guess.  Thanks for pointing that out.

    Btw: texmf.cnf(5) would be great.

Having two independent documents to update doesn't sound like a good
idea to me -- as you've already seen, even one place can't be kept up to
date.  Automatically creating a texmf.cnf.5 from the Texinfo seems
plausible (maybe not in perfect man page style, but who cares), if
anyone cares to do it.  I don't :).
