Perhaps it is a compiler bug, since it does not happen on other
platforms.  As a test, can you easily try compiling the sources yourself
(since you wrote to me about this before...), with whatever gcc you
might have?  I advise no optimization.  

FWIW, the current version of gcc is 3.4.2.
