    this still permits publishers to make a verbatim copy, make their own 
    cover, publish it and not mention tex live at all;

I'll ask rms about where the limits lie, in his opinion.

    (1) Is tex live as a bundle copyrighted?

Not in my opinion, anyway.  The very concept of "compilation copyright"
seems legally (and ethically) doubtful to me.

    (2) In order to be able to help users, if the image is used, a cd
    cover should mention (1) the name tex live, (2) the version number,
    (3) the editor, (4) url ...

You'll be happy to know that the editors of both the forthcoming books
have sent me text exactly like this.  They have no interest in somehow
making TL invisible.
