[tex-live] hmm, pdftex and finding files

Ok, I understand. So I zapped all my texmf-var, have
TEXMFMAIN=texlive/Master/texmf, and run texconfig init and updmap, 
now this is working. 
BUT:
Using times.sty in latex and dvips it:
[~/tex/goedel/ismvl03] dvips ismvl03 
This is dvips(k) 5.92b Copyright 2002 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com)
' TeX output 2003.02.10:2323' -> ismvl03.ps
dvips: ! Couldn't find header file 8r.enc

Grr:
[~/tex/goedel/ismvl03] find /src/p4-base/Master -name 8r.enc
/src/p4-base/Master/texmf/fontname/8r.enc
/src/p4-base/Master/texmf/vtex/enc/8r.enc

So why this now? This shouldn't happen, or?
