One more data point.  If I decode the font, replace Nimbus everywhere
with Nxmbus, reencode the font, and use *that*, everything works fine.

So the only change I made was to the embedded font name, and that
"fixes" it.

This seems to show, pretty clearly, that by downloading the partial
font for Nimbus, we are breaking the underlying "Times" font.

Thoughts?
