Thanks Herbert. The following is my file listing

  *File List*
minimal.cls 2001/05/25 Standard LaTeX minimal class
pstricks.sty 2008/11/26 v0.40 LaTeX wrapper for `PSTricks' (RN,HV)
pstricks.tex 2009/01/25 v1.27 `PSTricks' (tvz,hv)
   xcolor.sty 2007/01/21 v2.11 LaTeX color extensions (UK)
    color.cfg 2007/01/18 v1.5 color configuration of teTeX/TeXLive
    dvips.def 1999/02/16 v3.0i Driver-dependant file (DPC,SPQR)
  ***********
I'm missing a few files from your listing and the pstricks.tex looks
to be 4 days older than yours. The output has the proper shapes but
the filled circle has easily discernible horizontal lines getting much
more prominent near the equator.

I have also found that in the following code snippet (taken from the
manual)

  \begin{pspicture}[linewidth=1cm](4,4)
	 \psline[linecolor=red](0,0)(4,4)
  	\psline[linecolor=blue,strokeopacity=0.5](0,4)(4,0)
  	\psline[linecolor=green,strokeopacity=0.5](0,3.5) (4,3.5)
  	\psline[linecolor=yellow,strokeopacity=0.5](0,0.5) (4,0.5)
  \end{pspicture}

the yellow and green lines show no opacity although the blue does.
Thanks, Jon.
