[pdftex] The letter beta in certain adobe pdf viewers

Hello all-

I've discovered an odd problem with documents compiled using the
pdflatex that appear when using several different pdf viewers on
ereaders. The letter beta is printed on top of the previous letter.
This happens in:
1) The adobe pdf viewer on the Pocketbook 902 and 903
2) The adobe pdf viewer on the Entourage Edge
3) The pdf viewer on the Sony ereaders
4) The Kindle pdf viewer (both the regular Kindle and the Kindle DX)
As for the last two, I do not know if they are made from the Adobe
Reader Toolkit; I believe that the first two are.

However, in these same pdfs the letter beta appears fine when viewed
with Adobe Reader either on Windows or Linux, and also with Evince on
Linux. This would suggest that perhaps the problem is in the toolkit
being used for these devices; on the other hand, though, if I compile to
postscript and then convert to pdf the letter beta is fine (i.e. it
isn't written on top of the previous letter). This suggests that
perhaps the problem is with pdflatex.

I would be more than happy to try other pdfs on my Kindle DX and/or
provide screenshots if it would be helpful. If anyone could shed some
light on this issue I'd be deeply appreciative. Thank you!
