Package longtable uses the .aux file to store column widths.
Then it knows the widths of the previous run.

BTW, this is the wrong list for this kind of quesions,
because the question is not related to the extensions
of pdfTeX in any way.
Try the mailing list `texhax at tug.org' or the newsgroup `comp.text.tex'.
