what does that mean?

luatex seems to be the only engine actively under development, but it
doesn't seem to be reusing the same personnel (much).

luatex may or may not supplant all the functions of pdftex, in the same
way that pdftex has supplanted "bare" tex.  but the signs are that luatex
will be "there for us" on a predictable timetable.

there are articles about it in the latest tugboat (which arrived here a
small number of days back, while i was away).  i've not read them.
