[pdftex] Protrusion confusion.

I am using texlive 2008 beta. I made up a pdftex sample that looked
like this:
---------------------------------
\pdfoutput=1
\pdfpagewidth 6in
\pdfpageheight 9in
\hsize 4.5in
\vsize 7in
\pdfhorigin .75in
\parindent 0.375in
\font\rm pplr8r at 12pt
\font\it pplri8r at 12pt
\baselineskip 15pt
\nopagenumbers
\frenchspacing
\rm
\pdfadjustspacing=1
\input protcodex.tex
%\pdfprotrudechars=1
\setprotcode\font
\pdffontexpand\rm 10 10 5 autoexpand
\noindent
(etc.)
---------------------------

This worked OK. But when I uncomment \pdfprotrudechars the lines
ending in hyphens etc. protrude too far into the right margin. Not
only the hyphen but the character next to it protrudes.

protcodex.tex is the same as protcode.tex except the \makeatletter and
\makeatother statements have been commented out because they are not
plain pdftex statements.
